Using our Tramper Mobility Scooter
Our Tramper is only available for booking at our Chapel Point Hub at Chapel St Leonards.
The Tramper is a large, all-terrain mobility vehicle designed to support people with mobility challenges to access the outdoors, particularly on uneven or off-road terrain.
It is intended primarily for use along the King Charles III England Coast Path and surrounding suitable areas, between the North Sea Obsertavtory, at Chapel Point beach and Bibby’s Beach Bar, at Ingoldmells south beach. While it is designed to handle more challenging terrain, it is not a beach wheelchair and is not suitable for use on large areas of soft sand or dunes. For beach access, our beach wheelchairs remain the most appropriate option.
If your main intention is to visit busy pedestrian areas such as shops or markets, there are more suitable mobility scooters available from other providers. The Tramper must not be used inside shops or buildings. Our Tramper is intended to be used on suitable footpaths and is not registered for road use.
Route Planning & Use
- Before setting off, you must discuss your planned route and intended use with a member of our team. We will advise you on suitable and safe routes, as well as appropriate distances based on conditions and battery range.
- Please be mindful of the width and turning space required when planning your route. Not all paths will be wide enough to safely accommodate the Tramper, particularly when turning.
- The Tramper is designed to manage uneven terrain; however, it is limited to inclines of up to 25%. Steeper gradients must be avoided.
This guidance is provided to help ensure your safety and to protect the equipment. You must follow the advice given.
If the Tramper becomes stuck, damaged, or unable to return due to it being used outside of the advised areas (for example on the beach or other unsuitable terrain), or due to travelling beyond a safe distance resulting in battery depletion, you may be responsible for the cost of recovery. You may also be responsible for costs if the key is lost, damaged or not returned.
User Requirements
- Users must be aged 14 or over. If the user is under 18, a responsible adult aged 18 or over must complete and sign the user agreement on their behalf.
- All users must have a responsible walking companion aged 18 or over, who is physically and mentally able to provide assistance if required.
- You must complete and pass a short capability assessment before use.
- You must have sufficient vision to safely operate the Tramper, including the ability to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 6 metres, and must not have any significant visual impairment that would prevent you from identifying and avoiding obstacles or hazards.
- You must have adequate upper body strength, upper limb mobility, and hand dexterity to grip both handlebars securely, operate the controls, and steer the Tramper safely.
- You must be able to transfer on and off the Tramper independently, or with the assistance of your accompanying companion.
- You must have sufficient understanding and learning ability to follow instructions provided by volunteers, operate the Tramper safely, recognise hazards, and respond appropriately to changing conditions.
- You will be required to complete a declaration confirming that you do not have any medical condition, or are not taking any medication, which may affect your ability to safely operate the Tramper.
General Use
- The Tramper must not be left unattended at any time
- The Tramper must not be transported on public transport or in any other vehicle
- The Tramper is for use within the local area only, as advised by our team
- The Tramper is designed for a single user only. Children, additional passengers, or animals must not be carried on the Tramper at any time
Equipment Information

- The controls can be adjusted for left- or right-handed use — our team will set this up for you during your assessment
Battery & Range
The Tramper has a range of up to 30 miles, however this will vary depending on factors such as:
- User weight
- Terrain
- Temperature and weather conditions
The battery will be fully charged when you set off. Please monitor the battery level during your journey and plan your route accordingly.
Booking
- The Tramper is available for use for a maximum of 4 hours per booking
- Bookings must be made at least 48 hours in advance
- To request to book the Tramper, simply fill in our booking form [here]. If we can accommodate your request, we will contact you by the email address you give on this form. You will then be asked for a £10 deposit to secure your booking. Don’t worry — this will be refunded after your visit as long as:
- If you need to cancel you let us know by 5pm the day before, and
- You’re not more than 30 minutes late collecting or returning the Tramper.
- We’ll also be asked to upload photo ID of the person using the Tramper, or their parent or carer if they are under 18. A photocard driving licence is perfect, but a passport with a proof of address (like a utility bill) is also fine
On the day of your booking
Please bring your ID along with you on the day.
Before you are able to leave the site with the Tramper, you will be asked to
- Complete your assessment
- Familiarise yourself with the controls
- Ask any questions you may have
- You must also ensure that you have access to a mobile phone with sufficient battery charge for the duration of your booking.
It is important that you feel confident using the Tramper before leaving the site.
- You may store your own wheelchair, mobility scooter, or equipment in the Beach Ability hut if necessary. This is done at your own risk, as our insurance does not cover personal property. The hut will be securely locked when no volunteer is on duty
